History

The Marycrest campus has a long history of ministry to those in need. Established in the early 1900's by the Sisters of St. Francis, the campus has provided shelter to Denver's homeless, education to low-income children, and hope to thousands of individuals and families over many generations.

In the early 1990's the Sisters of St. Francis deliberated how best to use the sprawling, 26-acre campus in northwest Denver to continue serving the surrounding neighborhoods after the Marycrest High School closed. The Sisters found that there were inadequate assisted-living options for low-income adults with disabilities in the Denver area. In particular, younger adults who could not live independently typically had no choice but to move to nursing facilities where they had very little privacy or independence and often felt socially isolated. In response, Marycrest Assisted Living was established, and two assisted-living residences opened in 1988: Harmony, for younger adults (ages 18 to 55), and Serenity, for older adults.

Today, Marycrest Assisted Living is the signature ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis, continuing their tradition of service to those in need.
